Blogging & ReBlogging

image

I’ve been thinking about this for a while now and watching what happens on other peoples sites as an indication of why people blog.

For me it is a fairly simple reason - I take photographs and like them to be seen - especially by family who live 5,000 miles away from us.

It is also a creative outlet for me (without wanting to sound as if I am actually even slightly creative) and much easier than attaching the photos to e-mails and sending them to friends and family,  just like I used to do.

So, from watching Tumblr for a while now it is clear that people fall into two major groups of bloggers with a few satellites around them;

- There are the blogs that contain all or mostly original work - whether it is images or music or tech or a whole world of subjects;

- And then there are the serial Rebloggers who re-host images they find on the web and blogs on a daily basis.  To me this is a bit like tearing bits out of magazines that you love and sticking them on your bedroom wall - only now your potential audience is much, much bigger. This group tends to give opinions much more than the Original Bloggers, as they are making specific groupings of images and subjects.

The Satellite sites are communal collection grounds like filmisgod.tumblr.com and fuckyeahstreetlights.tumblr.com where people submit their photos and they are hosted to a much larger audience of mainly Rebloggers. This is the way to reach a considerably larger audience as I have found when posting to sites like these and watching my images disappear into the viral infinity.

Personally I don’t think that Original Bloggers or ReBloggers are any more important than each other - especially because people tend to create for an audience and enjoy positive feedback.

So, because I am schizophrenically OCD in certain areas of my life; I have three blogs that run from the same Tumblr host site that fulfil three different  criteria for me :-

digitaltoanalogue.tumblr.com - which is called analogueski after the fact that many of the photos I put up are taken with Former Soviet Union cameras. This is only my own work and at this point the biggest follower of this site is my Mother (Thanks Mum).

reanalogueski.tumblr.com - my ReBlogging site of images that I find and enjoy.

analoguetoharinezumi - a site dedicated to video and stills from the small Japanese cameras that take video that is more akin to Super8 than the new clean digital videos we all tend to have now.

I don’t think what I do here is unusual or unique; as over the past few months I have noticed that this is a trend used by a number of Original Bloggers who also want to be tearing ideas out of magazines - but don’t want to dilute their own sites.

So after reading the above; you are probably thinking - ‘why doesn’t he just use facebook like the rest of us?’.

I can’t say that Blogging or facebook have any more merit than one another - only blogging is like talking to a wall and facebook is an audience who you choose. Blogging is perhaps more of an obvious meritocracy as people only follow your site if you have something to say or show but there again, perhaps those that Blog; like me; fear direct feedback on their work.
